Not Flowering

The plant is not flowering.

This symptom is most often associated with either a lack of sunlight or a deficiency of phosphorus. However, there are many reasons why an African Violet may not flower. You may either view the list of possible causes, or select from the list of additional symptoms below in order to narrow down your search.

Note: A plant that is not flowering should be distinguished from buds that are not opening. When a plant is not flowering, it will cease to even develop buds.

Additional Symptoms

• Leaves pale. They appear yellow in color.
• Leaves pale on the edge. Edges appear yellow in color.
• Leaves pale between the veins.
• Leaves have yellow spots on them.
• Leaves have white spots on them.
• Leaves darken. They appear brown or black in color.
• Leaves darken on the edge. Edges appear brown in color.
• Leaves darken only on the tip. Tips appear brown in color.
• Leaves are deformed or twisted.
• Leaves have streaks on the underside of them. Streaks are gray or silver in color.
• Leaves curl down on the edge.
• Leaves wilt. They may appear translucent brown with a soft, jelly-like consistency.
• Leaves are dry and shriveled.
• Leaves are damaged.
• Leaves have holes in them.
• Leaves are broken.
• Leaves are smaller than normal.
• Variegated leaves turn entirely green.
• Root system does not fill the pot.
• Plant is rootbound. The roots are growing out and around the rootball.
• Rootball has tiny white or gray insects on it.
• Plant appears lopsided. It is smaller on the side closest to the window.
• Plant growth is rangy, i.e., the leaves and stems are becoming elongated.
• Elongated neck forms above the soil line.
• Potting soil always seems to be saturated.
• Potting soil is dry to the touch.
• Urea nitrogen is present in the fertilizer.
• Visible insects. These insects may only be visible with magnifying glass. They may also be found on the roots.
• No other symptoms.
